Nancy Pelosi is between a rock and a hard place and the cracks are starting to show. Her party, or the liberal wing, is demanding she impeach President Trump.
Pelosi knows this is political suicide so she is trying to resist her charges while defending her flank from those in the House who would dethrone her.
They could swap out Pelosi for someone else if they want and she knows it. But if she impeaches she hands Trump a key victory and basically guarantees Trump’s reelection.
So, she went to her hometown to rally the troops and give a big speech for the California Democratic Convention…
The crowd immediately interrupts her and heckles her with calls to impeach Trump. They were quickly shushed, but it showed her problem for which she has no solution.
Too funny – good luck herding cats Nancy.
From The Washington Examiner: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s speech before the California Democratic Convention was briefly disrupted by calls for President Trump’s impeachment.
“With the power of the gavel we will continue to legislate to make progress for the American people, but we will also investigate to defend our democracy this president and his administration have cowered on,” the California Democrat told the gathering held in San Francisco, touting how six House committees are leading inquiries into Trump, his 2016 campaign, and the president’s business dealings.
Pelosi, who has been steering her conference away from commencing proceedings to forcibly remove Trump from office after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, vowed to uncover “the truth for the American people.”
“Why is it that the president of the United States won’t defend our democracy from this foreign threat? What is the president covering up?” the speaker said, before chants of “impeach” broke out in the convention hall. “I told you this was like coming home for me,” she jested in response.
Democratic congressional leadership has faced escalating pressure from some of their members, including 2020 candidates for the party’s presidential nomination, to move toward ousting Trump from the White House. The chorus grew louder this week after Mueller’s public statement in which he said his team would have explicitly stated the president did not commit a crime if it was confident he didn’t. Pelosi, however, has been slow-walking the prospect of an impeachment given the divisiveness the process could cause for the country.
From The Hill: “In his report, special counsel Mueller warned us in the starkest terms that there was an attack on our election and an attack on our democracy,” Pelosi said. “Why won’t the president defend us from this attack?”
“What is the president covering up?” she asked. “We must investigate the president’s welcoming of the assault on our democracy.
A single protester shouting “Impeach!” soon became a few, then a few dozen and then perhaps a hundred as Pelosi seemed to hint at a future inquiry.
“This isn’t about politics, it isn’t about partisanship, Democrats versus Republicans, no. It’s about patriotism, it’s about the sanctity of the constitution and it’s about the future of our nation. We will go where the facts lead us. We will insist on the truth. We will build an ironclad case to act,” Pelosi said.
